This Privacy Policy explains how Expiry Scanner (“the app”, “we”, “us”) handles information when you use the app. Expiry Scanner is developed for tracking product expiry dates using barcode scanning and photo-based OCR (optical character recognition).
Expiry Scanner is designed to work primarily on your device. Product entries, categories, groups, and settings you create are stored locally on your device and are not uploaded to any server we control. The app does make a small number of network requests, described below, to provide barcode lookup, advertising, and optional scan-review functionality.
The following data is created by you within the app and stored locally using on-device storage. It is not transmitted to us, and we cannot access it, unless you choose to share it with us as described in Section 2.4:
This data remains on your device until you delete it (e.g. by removing a product in the app, clearing app data, or uninstalling the app).

Photos you capture or select are processed and stored locally on your device. They are not uploaded to us or to any third party, unless you choose to send a scan for review as described below.
When you scan a product barcode, the app sends the barcode number to one or more free, open product databases to try to retrieve the product’s name and, where available, its expiry date. These requests contain only the barcode number â no personal information, photos, or device identifiers are included. The app queries these sources in order, moving to the next only if the barcode isn’t found in the previous one:
Each of these services’ own privacy practices apply to the request sent to it.
If the barcode isn’t found in any of these sources, you can enter the product name manually.
After scanning a product label, the app gives you the option to manually send that photo to us for review, for example if the app misread the expiry date. This action is optional and only happens if you choose to trigger it â it does not happen automatically.
If you choose to send a scan for review, the app uploads to a server we control:
This upload does not include your name, other product entries, categories, settings, or any other data stored in the app. We use these submissions solely to review and improve the accuracy of the app’s OCR/date-recognition feature. Submitted images and OCR text are retained only as long as needed for this review and improvement purpose, after which they are deleted.
Expiry Scanner shows an ad when the app is opened, provided by Google AdMob. To do this, Google’s Mobile Ads SDK may collect your device’s advertising ID and other technical information (such as general device and app information) to serve and measure ads. This is handled by Google, not by us directly. You can learn more about how Google uses this data at Google’s Privacy & Terms and manage your ad personalization settings in your device’s system settings.
If you enable expiry reminders, the app schedules local notifications directly on your device using your device’s operating system. These notifications are generated and delivered entirely on-device â no notification data is sent to us or to any third-party push notification service.

Product data, photos, and settings are retained on your device only for as long as you keep them in the app. You can delete individual products at any time within the app, or remove all app data by clearing the app’s storage or uninstalling it from your device. Since we do not store this data on our own servers, there is no separate deletion request process required for on-device data â deleting it on your device is sufficient.
If you have sent a scan for review as described in Section 2.4, that image and its OCR text are stored on our server only for as long as needed to review and improve OCR accuracy, and are then deleted. You may contact us using the details in Section 9 to request earlier deletion of a submitted review image.
Network requests made by the app (barcode lookup, scan review submissions, and ad serving) use HTTPS encryption in transit. Data stored locally on your device is subject to your device’s own operating system security (e.g. lock screen, disk encryption).
Expiry Scanner is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example if the app’s features change. Changes will be reflected by an updated “Last updated” date at the top of this document.
